Limited Edition "Boo-tterscotch M&M's!

Well, it's summer, so obviously it's time for Halloween themed candy to drop. Just like in March, when there's still snow on the ground, it's the perfect time for Sam's Summer to grace the beer aisles.  Just like when Egg Nog hits your local grocer just in time for the holidays...later this month.  Yep, nothing is sacred anymore. Instead of being happy that we have seasons and holidays to look forward to, people just want to enjoy the parts of these times longer and earlier than ever. At this rate, in about ten years, people won't take down their Christmas trees at all anymore. They will just leave them up and the holiday season will no longer mean anything. But let's face it, there's no use getting upset about what other people do, right? I just stand my ground and never sip a Pumpkin beer until October first. Never let a Pumpkin Spice English Muffin cross my lips until I'm in the same month as Halloween.

But when it comes to candy I have to review here, I guess I can make an exception! Our first Halloween candy review this year comes from M&M'S! You can bet your ass if there's a holiday coming that M&M's have some wild flavor to debut (Remember Candy Corn M&M's?) and they didn't disappoint this year! Let's take a look at White BOO-tterscotch M&M's!

First off, I love the package. Huge Red M&M terrified of the BOO-tterscotch candies in front of him, while ghosts and bats fly around him. You'd be scared too!

You'll notice that they are colored in a strange manner. There's brown, a dark-ish yellow, which the painter in me wants to guess would actually be Yellow Ocre, and then there's...well...one that's kind of flesh colored. Which, is a little gross.

"I swear these aren't people flavored M&M'S!"

I do have to say, once you tear open the bag the room does fill up with a butterscotch smell. At first it's just an unknown sweet smell, but once you eat one of these your brain realizes what it is. I never would have suggested a butterscotch M&M in a million years, but they definitely nail the flavor here! They pretty much taste like the M&M version of butterscotch pudding. I think it's the white chocolate base they use, and in this case it directly made me think of that pudding flavor and texture once you crush up the candy coating. The weirdest part of this, is that I probably haven't had butterscotch pudding since I was a kid eating one of those little plastic cups out of my bag lunch. But the second you taste these it rushes back. It's like a fat kids version of a Vietnam flash back.

This gif was too perfect to pass up.

So we can definitely confirm that they nail the flavor they were looking for. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they are great. I found that I liked these more than I expected, BUT unlike other flavors, I could only eat a small amount of these before I had to fold the bag over for later. The butterscotch flavor is pretty strong and I found them to get very rich after a certain amount. Unlike, say, Peanut Butter M&M's. I'm pretty sure I could just eat those until I died. Right up until the final second I would be pushing another one through my pursed lips. BOO-tterscotch? Not so much.

If you're a fan of Butterscotch, don't miss these. You'd absolutely love them. If you're like me, and have butterscotch so infrequently that you have pudding flashbacks to your childhood...you'll probably think these are just okay. But either way, you gotta applaud them for once again trying something new!

In the end I give BOO-tterscotch M&M's a solid C+. If I was a big butterscotch fan I'm sure it would be higher, but since there aren't even that many butterscotch flavored items out there on the shelves, I'm guessing the fan base might be small. That being said, these could be a hit at your Halloween party, so perhaps scoop up a bag and let them haunt your cupboard until it's time to don your costume and start partying.

Or hell, eat them right now and wash them down with some Egg Nog while basking in the glow of your Christmas lights. Screw tradition!

Limited Edition Maple Bacon Pop-Tarts!

Sooner or later every snack company answers the call of Bacon. Consumers and foodies love it. Pop culture has embraced it. Bacon is king and we all know it. But there are times where bacon makes it into the snack world where we scratch our heads and wonder if we ever needed it. Enter...Maple Bacon Pop-Tarts...

When I first heard about these I didn't think they were real. When I saw the box I thought for sure it was a photoshop job that someone tossed up online to get people talking. But then one of my pals back in New Hampshire let me know that they were real and he had tried them. So my search began. They finally showed up out here in Seattle and I scooped up a box as quick as I could. I was excited to try them but also expecting to be disappointed. How could the bacon work? Was it going to be those gross crunchy Bacos type pieces? Or would they go with something new?

Like most Pop-tarts, these aren't the best right out of the package. Some hold up better than others. I personally love Strawberry Frosted right out of the package. Many a camping trip have found me Straight Pop-Tartin' like a boss. 48 pack slung over my shoulder, slapping packs into the palms of my buddies as they woke up in the morning and crawled from their tents. But these? These you definitely want to toast up. It helps. Because the bacon is weird. It's a strange chemical sprinkle that kind of tastes like fake bacon and smoke. It's not overpowering, but it's not really the best taste either.

Luckily the maple inside is where these really shine. It seems like a flavor they should have been making since they started. Perhaps that's because I'm from New England and nothing makes me happier than Maple flavored EVERYTHING. But once you toast these up, they aren't bad! The bacon gives off a nice, little bit of salt flavor that goes well with the icing and sweet maple innards.

In the end I'm going to give Maple Bacon Pop-Tarts a C-. The bacon is fake and weird. But the Maple is pretty tasty. Toasted, they are alright. Maybe pairing meats with sugary toaster pastries isn't the best idea. As a man who loves bacon, I wanted nothing more than to tell you all that these were awesome and that the bacon revolution continues to dominate all it comes into contact with...but I would be lying. There are some times when bacon isn't the right choice. This is one of them.

Feel the burn! Poppin' Jalapeno Doritos!

What's your favorite flavor of Dorito? Everyone has one. Some people like to rock the Cool Ranch. Others keep it simple and roll with the original, Nacho Cheese. Over the years Doritos have added a bunch of other flavors to their stable. Some as permanent fixtures, like Spicy Sweet Chili, and Spicy Nacho, and others as special limited time offers, like Black Pepper Jack and Pizza Supreme.  Doritos have remained one of the biggest selling snack chips year after year by keeping the classics around, but also trying out something new quite often. Well, that and they usually have ridiculous over the top commercials.

Well before our boy Mike rode off into the sunset and left the world of food blogging behind, he instilled in me a strong love for Spicy Nacho Doritos. I stand firm that those are my favorite. But that belief has since been shaken. By new Poppin' Jalapeno Doritos. Yup. Right out the gate I'm letting you know that they are that damn good.

With Spicy Nacho, I love that you still get your intense Dorito cheese flavor, but along with it you get a slow burn that steadily builds the more you eat. After a while your tongue is on fire, but it's a flavorful fire that you've earned through ripping through half a bag of chips. Well Poppin' Jalapeno are exactly the same, except with an added jalapeno pepper flavor, and just a little bit more of a burn.

So yeah, these are basically jalapeno popper Dortitos. Cheesy, pepper flavors and a nice burn. I also noticed that there were more chips in this bag that seemed to be heavily blasted with the flavor dust than usual. If you're like me, whenever I'm eating a Dorito, no matter what the flavor, I always like getting the ones that seem to have extra Dorito dust. They are the diamonds in the rough. You spy one down in the bag and your fingers descend into the darkness like the robotic arm on an aquatic sub trying to carefully collect a sample from the ocean floor. And when you raise it up and the Dorito is caked with flavor, you smile, because you know it's going to be awesome.  There were a ton of those in this one small bag that I had! By the time I polished it off I had a solid mouth burn going. You know, the good kind!

Poppin' Jalapeno Doritos are great. If you're into a solid tongue burn and a heavy amount of cheesy pepper flavor, you will dig these. I have yet to see a big bag of these so I'm going to go ahead and say they don't exist. I could be wrong! If I am, drop some comment knowledge on me. But then drop everything else and go get a bag of these. Heck, get ten. Buy the store out of their stock, because once these are gone, they are gone...well...unless Doritos decides to add them to the regular rotation. Which I heavily endorse. Poppin' Jalapeno Doritos get an A+, the highest FGFB rating! BOOM!

Filled Cupcake Oreo Cookies!

Remember a couple years ago when Hostess went under and everyone under the sun started freaking out because they wouldn't be able to get their favorite Hostess snacks anymore? It was kind of ridiculous. If you haven't bought a Twinkie in ten years, you probably won't miss them. I know I wouldn't. But what would I miss? Those delicious Hostess chocolate cupcakes. Sure, I might only have one once or twice a year, but they are a classic childhood treat that I like to revisit. Other than them being miniature, the recipe seems to have stayed the same. A flavor that just about everyone loves. Even those maniacs at Nabisco. So much so, that they decided it was time to give us a limited edition Oreo cookie based on them...FILLED CUPCAKE OREO COOKIES!

While I can see the merits of not wanting to slap the name of a recently bankrupt company across your snacks, I think the marketing folks might have been able to come up with a better name than "Filled Cupcake", right? Well, that's about the only negative thing you are going to read in this review, because these are one of the best limited edition flavors that Oreo has ever done. EVER. Think about how many of their flavors we have reviewed. Let that sink in. If you're new here, let me lay it out: We review approximately 124 flavors of Oreo cookies per year. This is one of the best ever.

You know damn well I'm not just tossing that around! Not in a world where Reese's Oreos exist! Not in a world with Cinnamon Bun Oreos! Not in a world that brought us Marshmallow Krispie Oreos! Birthday Cake Oreos?! Nope, I just wouldn't do it and you know that. But I'm serious here. These bring you the usual Oreo cookie, with what appears to be their chocolate creme in the middle. But then you open it up and see that this isn't just a chocolate Oreo, this one has a surprise in the middle!

When I first saw these I figured it was chocolate creme with their usual Oreo creme in the middle. Not the case. This filling is exactly like the light, sweet filling that you would find in a Hostess cupcake. Completely different consistency from the surrounding chocolate creme!

Very cool. Not only cool, but off the charts delicious too! The flavor wizards at Nabisco have outdone themselves this time. Sure the texture is all different, but this is the closest you could get to making a sandwich cookie taste like a "filled cupcake". There's no doubt in my mind! It's a chocolatey sweet flavor explosion with a triple threat of dessert textures. How can you go wrong here?

Despite the lame name, Filled Cupcake Oreos do exactly what they set out to do. They mimicked the flavor of a Hostess Cupcake and blow your mind which their magical combination of different cremes and icing.  Being a limited edition, these will go one of two ways. A: They are already scarce and whatever bag you next get your hands on will be your last. Or B: They will be popular and on the shelves for months. Either way, BUY THEM ALL. They are that good! I'm giving them a straight up A!

Cinnamon Bun Oreo Cookies!

Well, a new year has begun, and if I was a betting man, I would have bet that we'd get a new Oreo cookie before the end of January.  If only someone was willing to take that action, because I rolled up to my local supermarket the other day only to be faced a huge display of Red Velvet (Which are back for a limited time, but who cares because we reviewed them last year), and...THESE:

I snatched a package off of the display so quick you would have thought my name was Barry Allen.  I was in such a hurry to buy them and get out of there that I forgot I was on foot and had no bag. So I did what anyone would. I stuffed them inside my jacket so nobody driving or walking by would see me carrying a package of cookies down the street. Makes sense right? So the whole way home I'm wondering if there's any way they could have captured the true glory of a fresh, delicious cinnamon bun in a cookie...

I instantly ripped into the package the moment I got home. Right off the bat, before I even touched a cookie I knew that they were going to be good. The smell of them literally filled the room. Was someone cooking cinnamon buns before I walked in? Nope, the mad scientists behind the flavors at Nabisco had just nailed the smell. Bravo gents, but the real test is the taste test...

The cookie part reminds me a lot of the cookies from the Gingerbread Oreos. They are crunchy and bursting with cinnamon flavor. But the creme? The CREME. That is where the magic happens.

Yes they have somehow nailed the flavor of cinnamon bun icing perfectly. That, combined with the cinnamon cookie ends up being an awesome Oreo version of a cinnamon bun. They definitely hit the flavor right on the head with these.  Another good thing is that they seem to have a plentiful amount of the creme in each cookie. It definitely seemed to be more than a regular Oreo, but not quite as much as a Double Stuf.  Damn, is it good!

If there was one change I would make to Cinnamon Bun Oreo cookies, it might be to put a cinnamon swirl there, just for the gimmick. Imagine the icing in the middle swirled with cinnamon? It would be great. Or perhaps if they had gotten the Cinnabon license? That would be incredible.

But honestly, that's grasping at straws. The first new flavor of Oreo out the gate in 2016 has set the bar high. Cinnamon Bun Oreos get an A from me. Get out there and get some before they are gone!

Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pecan Pie M&M's!

The fall snack season is here in full force already! Everywhere you look it's "PUMPKIN SPICE ________." I mean, beer companies start putting out their fall flavors in friggin' July these days, so I'm surprised we aren't getting all of our pumpkin flavored crap at the same time, but I'm happy we don't! By the way, if you are someone that buys and drinks pumpkin beer before it's cold outside...you and I have very differing views of the world. But to each his own! You can set up your Christmas tree in September for all I care.  Pssh. I don't care at all. You know what I care about? M&M's! So let's review some!

Well, well, well. This season our friends over at Mars decided to try something very new for the M&M candy line. Pumpkin Spice Latte! Which, if you aren't aware, has become sort of a buzz phrase already this fall season. You can't scroll through three people in your Facebook feed without someone posting some variant of a meme talking about how "White Girls Love Pumpkin Spice Lattes." I chuckled the first time I saw it. Now, a few weeks and ten thousand views later, whenever I see it, I want to go buy a Pumpkin Spice Latte and bash it over somebodies head. But, the question at hand, here is this: Do the Pumpkin Spice Latte M&M's taste like a pumpkin spice latte?

Ehhhhhh...kinda? Here's the deal, when you eat a handful of these, you can taste pumpkin and even a coffee flavor. They got that part right. But the base of it is chocolate and that's the flavor that overpowers these like crazy. These are chocolate, and then you say, "Oh, yes, there it is. A slight pumpkin spice/coffee flavor in the background.

I will say, however, that the more of these you eat, the stronger the spice flavor gets. So later on it ends up being more chocolate with a strange spice flavor. But it never reaches the point where you're asking yourself if you've just taken a sip of an actual Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Fear not, white girls, if you absolutely need to buy these, you will be greeted with some faint pumpkin spice latte flavor, but in the end it tastes more like a MOCHA PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE. Which doesn't sound too bad, but in real life, I wasn't very impressed with these. I give them a C. Points for trying something new for the best time of the year, but maybe chocolate wasn't the best base for these. Big thanks to Sue for hooking us up with a bag of these since I could not find them anywhere!

Next up is the Pecan Pie M&M's! Ol' Green M&M is looking extra sexy on this package, and if I'm reading it right, we're supposed to believe she's a country gal. Wearing some cowboy boots, sitting on a bale of hay, with that piece of wheat between those sultry lips. If anyone knows about pecan pie, it's a country gal, right? I'm not sure if that's right at all, but that's what they want us to believe here so let's run with it. I never loved Pecan Pie growing up, but my brother makes a BAD ASS chocolate Pecan Pie so I've learned to love them now. But do these capture that familiar flavor?

You're damn right they did! Let me tell you this, I've never had an M&M smell so strongly of the flavor as these. The second I tore this bag open (and you can see that is no exaggeration), the room filled with the smell of Pecan Pie. Seriously. It's pretty intense! The color scheme of these is kinda gross, off-white, dull yellow and dark brown. I get that these are fall colors, but come on. There should be at least one shade of orange in there! But that's really the only bad thing I can say about these, because they taste awesome! They taste so much like Pecan Pie that it might weird you out a bit...

But take a moment for your brain to catch up and you'll realize, yeah it's a bit more like a chocolate pecan pie, but they pretty much nailed this flavor with ease. It's hard to deny that these taste exactly as they should.

In the end, I give these Pecan Pie M&M's a solid A. These win out because I feel like the Pecan Pie flavor is the prevalent taste and chocolate is in the background. The opposite of the Pumpkin Pie Latte M&M's. These are great and I highly recommend you fill your fall candy dish with some of these ASAP, because since they are limited edition, you know they will be gone soon!

If you're wondering where you can track these down, keep in mind that the Pumpkin Spice Latte M&M's are Target exclusive and the Pecan Pie M&M's are exclusive to Walmart. So if you want them both you're gonna have to hit two stores! BOGUS!

Hershey's Candy Corn candy bar!

Ah yes,  the summer is coming to and end. It might still be hot where you are, and the leaves haven't yet started changing. However, once we start seeing pumpkin flavored items showing up in the stores, we know that Fall is almost here. Now, this isn't pumpkin flavored, but just in time for all that nonsense to start up, Hershey's debuts their newest limited edition candy bar...The Hershey's Candy Corn bar!

Once upon a time Mike would have jumped at the chance to review this. He loved candy corn, God bless his poor soul. But since he vanished a few months ago under strange circumstances, I guess this review is up to me! Actually, now that I look back, I was the one to review both the Candy Corn M&M's AND the Candy Corn Oreos! Maybe I have a secret love for Candy Corn that I haven't yet come to grips with. So let's do this!

As someone who doesn't really enjoy candy corn, I can't fathom how it's still around. Who goes into the Halloween candy aisle and amidst all the wonders to be found there, leaves with a bag of candy corn? WHO? WHO DOES THIS? I can't understand it at all. Is it just old ladies? Well whoever it is, someone out there likes chewing on waxy little blobs of sweet "corn". But when I read this package and it says "Candy corn creme with candy bits" I'm not too excited. But as I ripped this monster open I'll tell you one thing that jumped out, the aroma. I left the room after taking pictures of this and returned twenty minutes later and could smell it in the hallway. Major Candy Corn aroma happening here. It's like I had a Bath and Body Works Candy Corn candle burning in here for an entire night. Is that even a thing? I'm not going to look. I'll leave that up to you readers!

I'll add another positive while we're at it. I think the Candy Corn bar was quite pretty! White chocolate with cool orange and yellow sprinkles throughout it. Well done, Hershey's! but people want to know about the taste. I'll tell you this...it's better than Candy Corn. Way better. The white chocolate gives it a very creamy texture and the sprinkles inside it are clearly a different consistency. They really could be made of candy corn. They have that waxy, chewy, candy corn feel.

If I had to choose between this and eating a handful of plain old Candy Corn? I'm going with this bar ten times over. It definitely captures the flavor of Candy Corn while putting a spin on it. That spin is covering it in white chocolate. Granted, that white chocolate is flavored like Candy Corn, but you aren't left with the weird aftertaste and debris that the real deal leaves behind.

In the end, this is a fun gimmick and worth checking out if you're into Candy Corn. Or, even if you aren't. I'm not really and I finished the entire thing no problem! I think in the end I would have liked to see Hershey's do something a little more wild with their limited edition flavors. But if this is as crazy as they get, it could be worse.
I give the Hershey's Candy Corn bar a B. They nailed the flavor, 100% even if it's not a flavor I completely love. Let's hope the other candy companies have some more exciting limited edition flavors for the 2015 Halloween candy season!

S'mores Oreo cookies!

If a month goes by and we don't have a new flavor of Oreo cookies to review, I think something is wrong with the world. It sends me into a panic. Is Nabisco going under? Has someone toppled this cookie giant? Is the sky falling? WHERE IS THE NEAREST BOMB SHELTER?! It goes something like that. Luckily this time around I didn't have to ride that emotional roller coaster because ol' Nabisco just dumped its latest limited edition flavor in our laps, just in time for those summer camping trips. S'MORES OREOS!

This package just makes me want a real S'more. Look at that thing!
So what are we dealing with here? Well it's a graham flavored cookie for starters. I'm glad they didn't cheap out on this and just make this out of Golden Oreo's. The graham cookie actually does taste like a graham cracker, but with that familiar Oreo crunch.  Inside lies waiting for you both chocolate and marshmallow creme.  Fun fact, nine times out of ten that you try to open these up to look at the creme, it comes apart so you're looking at the white/marshmallow side. It's a fun science experiment you can try at home. But back to the creme, it's what you expect. The usual Oreo chocolate creme and then the marshmallow that is a lot like the creme they had in their Marshmallow Crispy Oreo's but without the crispy part.

They definitely capture a fake s'more taste and they are about as great as an Oreo s'more cookie could be. But I always wonder if companies miss one important ingredient when trying to flavor something like S'more. The smoke. If you're making a real s'more over a fire, the marshmallow is always going to have a little smoky flavor to it. I think the next company to make something s'more flavored needs to take my advice and add that. Graham, chocolate, marshmallow and smoke. Nothing brings a wave of nostalgia like a waft of campfire smoke. Am I right?

Chocolate and Marshmallow creme!
Will these cookies replace the original s'more? Nope. Are they worth trying out as the latest of Oreo's limited edition flavors? 100%. Seriously. Scoop these up before they are gone. We had a rough time finding them ourselves. But definitely give them a try. Heck, if you've got a fire going outside one of these nights, perhaps even slap a melty marshmallow between two of these. I bet that would be faaaaaantastic.

We are giving S'mores Oreo cookies a B!  FYI: if the package had been normal size instead of these ridiculous mini-packs we would have upped that to a B+!
