Hold onto your butts! OREO is back with Key Lime Pie & Choco Chip flavors

Oreo please! Just RELAX! It's too much! These days it seems like there's a new flavor of Oreo out every few weeks. And with word on the wind of the fabled Swedish Fish Oreos, Fat Guy Food Bloggers around the globe are simultaneously begging you to stop, whilst pleading for more. So as we pump the breaks, and bring you this Jurassic sized 2 cookie review, (just kidding, my reviews are picture heavy and sparse with any real content) sit back, relax, breathe, and let my mouth do the tasting for you.

As the blog title suggests, I'm about to review Key Lime Pie Oreo, and the little less grammatically pleasing, Choco Chip Oreo. Let's sit down and get what you think would be the lesser of the two out of the way, Key Lime Pie.

Peeling back the top of this cookie bag, the room flooded with that sweet, limey thickness that can only really be described as... Key Lime Pie. I'm convinced Oreo should team up with Bath & Body Works, get their lead scent designers together to infuse Oreo scented body washes/scrubs/lotions/candles/whateverthefuck, and become the worlds most profitable company.

I'm enjoying this graham cracker cookie base they have here, it has a warmth to it that feels familiar, and then when the lime and....key?....come together, it delivers a slight tartness to the back of your mouth, and smooth creamy graham in the front. Overall pretty enjoyable, and a cookie that could easily become someones favorite. Mine?

You'll have to keep reading.

Up next: Choco Chip Oreos. This should be a no-brainer. Chocolate Chip Oreos? Of course they're going to be absolutely stellar.

The smell that exploded out of this package wasn't as identifiable as the KLP's. Right away it led me to believe there might be some oddness to what these cookies might taste like.

At first taste, I was unimpressed with these. And after much deliberation, the shop and I decided it tasted odd, not by so much of it's own design, but by the fact we had just eaten the Key Lime Pie Oreos, and with that flavor still overwhelming the taste buds, it threw off how these actually tasted. Cookie misdirection.

So with a fresh mouth, I revisited these guys, and came to the conclusion that these really shouldn't be named Choco Chip Oreo, but maybe Cookie Dough. They had that creaminess that you'd expect, but when all the elements of the cookie were together, it tasted a lot like premade chocolate chip cookie dough out of the tube, instead of a full blown cookie. It wasn't bad, but I think the hype machine that was my brain, made me think these cookies were going to be much different.

In the end, I think both of these had their charms. Key Lime Pie, much like Jeff Goldblum, ended up outperforming the other actor on stage, and forced me to change my ideas of what my cookie expectations in the future might be. While not bad, Choco Cookie Oreos ended up not giving a performance of note, and just kind of act as a placeholder until the cookie guys can figure out just how to bioengineer them properly.

I give Key Lime Pie Oreo a B+

and Choco Chip Oreo a C.

Strawberry Shortcake Oreo Cookies!

Listen, at this point, nobody out there is surprised to see another Oreo review from the gang at Fatguyfoodblog. At this point we have reviewed so many that we have to review ALL of them. But after my last review I saw something online and I vowed to talk about it before the next Oreo review. So here we go. 

You know what I noticed looking at other folks on the internet reviewing new flavors of Oreo Cookies? Complaining! Not reviewing. We all know they can't all be a home run. No, no, this was complaining that Oreo does all these wild flavors and it's pleading with them to stick to the original and that's it. To those folks, I say this: STOP WRITING A FOOD BLOG THAT REVIEWS JUNK FOOD! You don't deserve it! You should praise innovation and risk taking! In a world full of the same old crap, one cookie company wants to try something new every damn time you turn around, and you're going to complain about it? WEAK. You'll never hear that crap from us. That's what makes us the greatest food blog on the planet. 

Luckily the folks at Nabisco don't listen to the haters. Instead they are probably over at their head offices like:

Then they release another wild flavor and go back to dancing. Here's what they are throwing at us for the beginning of summer 2016! Strawberry Shortcake Oreo cookies! I can't believe they haven't done this one sooner. A classic summer dessert now reimagined as a sandwich cookie. But does it deliver the promised flavor, like the Cinnamon Bun Oreos, or do they fall flat like the Fruit Punch Oreos?

I was expecting these to be very similar to the Strawberries n' Creme Oreos that came out back in 2013, but from the moment I ripped open the package and the aroma of them filled the air, I knew they were going to be different. It was a pleasant, sweet, fake strawberry flavor and within minutes it was like I just lit up a giant Strawberry Yankee Candle because the entire room was bathed in it.

Before I even take a bite I'm taking away points for one little oversight. The package isn't resealable. In this day and age that blows my mind. For those of us who try not to destroy a whole package of Oreos in one night, well, this puts us in a spot. Because on one hand, I like to enjoy them a couple at a time here and there. If I can't reseal the package, I'm looking at a couple of days tops from when I open them to when they are stale as crap. Therefore, it forces me to have to eat way more than I want. Even though I do really want to, when it comes down to it. But still. I expect this kind of thing from Keebler, but not you, Nabisco.

 But the cookies themselves? They are great! The strawberry creme in the middle is fruity but not tart. It's sweet strawberry frosting sandwiched between two golden-ish Oreos. My brain tells me they taste slightly of angel food cake, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. My brain cannot be trusted here. The strawberry creme and cookie combination is fantastic and when I ask myself if they nailed the flavor as I'm eating one of these, I lean towards yes. But the only downside is that one of the best part of having a real Strawberry Shortcake is how fresh it tastes. Fresh berries all sliced up, with whipped cream on top of fluffy fresh angel food cake. It's one of those desserts that you eat and it reminds you that every dessert doesn't have to just be chocolate/caramel/peanutbutter/ sugar blasts. Some can have fruit! So damn fresh! Unless you are a white trash monster who uses frozen strawberries.  In that case, you might as well just deep fry it all.  But that's really the only downside here.

In the end, I give these a solid B! For a fruity summer offering, I think the Oreo wizards did a great job this time around. They capture a tasty fake version of a beloved summertime dessert. Chalk another win up to these guys! The hilarious part is that there are new flavors being released in a month! So we can't even joke about how soon we'll get new Oreo cookies because it's already happening! Fruity Crisp and Blueberry Pie! As soon as we get our grubby mitts on them, expect to see a review!

Filled Cupcake Oreo Cookies!

Remember a couple years ago when Hostess went under and everyone under the sun started freaking out because they wouldn't be able to get their favorite Hostess snacks anymore? It was kind of ridiculous. If you haven't bought a Twinkie in ten years, you probably won't miss them. I know I wouldn't. But what would I miss? Those delicious Hostess chocolate cupcakes. Sure, I might only have one once or twice a year, but they are a classic childhood treat that I like to revisit. Other than them being miniature, the recipe seems to have stayed the same. A flavor that just about everyone loves. Even those maniacs at Nabisco. So much so, that they decided it was time to give us a limited edition Oreo cookie based on them...FILLED CUPCAKE OREO COOKIES! 

While I can see the merits of not wanting to slap the name of a recently bankrupt company across your snacks, I think the marketing folks might have been able to come up with a better name than "Filled Cupcake", right? Well, that's about the only negative thing you are going to read in this review, because these are one of the best limited edition flavors that Oreo has ever done. EVER. Think about how many of their flavors we have reviewed. Let that sink in. If you're new here, let me lay it out: We review approximately 124 flavors of Oreo cookies per year. This is one of the best ever. 

You know damn well I'm not just tossing that around! Not in a world where Reese's Oreos exist! Not in a world with Cinnamon Bun Oreos! Not in a world that brought us Marshmallow Krispie Oreos! Birthday Cake Oreos?! Nope, I just wouldn't do it and you know that. But I'm serious here. These bring you the usual Oreo cookie, with what appears to be their chocolate creme in the middle. But then you open it up and see that this isn't just a chocolate Oreo, this one has a surprise in the middle!

When I first saw these I figured it was chocolate creme with their usual Oreo creme in the middle. Not the case. This filling is exactly like the light, sweet filling that you would find in a Hostess cupcake. Completely different consistency from the surrounding chocolate creme!

Very cool. Not only cool, but off the charts delicious too! The flavor wizards at Nabisco have outdone themselves this time. Sure the texture is all different, but this is the closest you could get to making a sandwich cookie taste like a "filled cupcake". There's no doubt in my mind! It's a chocolatey sweet flavor explosion with a triple threat of dessert textures. How can you go wrong here?

Despite the lame name, Filled Cupcake Oreos do exactly what they set out to do. They mimicked the flavor of a Hostess Cupcake and blow your mind which their magical combination of different cremes and icing.  Being a limited edition, these will go one of two ways. A: They are already scarce and whatever bag you next get your hands on will be your last. Or B: They will be popular and on the shelves for months. Either way, BUY THEM ALL. They are that good! I'm giving them a straight up A!

Cinnamon Bun Oreo Cookies!

 Well, a new year has begun, and if I was a betting man, I would have bet that we'd get a new Oreo cookie before the end of January.  If only someone was willing to take that action, because I rolled up to my local supermarket the other day only to be faced a huge display of Red Velvet (Which are back for a limited time, but who cares because we reviewed them last year), and...THESE:

I snatched a package off of the display so quick you would have thought my name was Barry Allen.  I was in such a hurry to buy them and get out of there that I forgot I was on foot and had no bag. So I did what anyone would. I stuffed them inside my jacket so nobody driving or walking by would see me carrying a package of cookies down the street. Makes sense right? So the whole way home I'm wondering if there's any way they could have captured the true glory of a fresh, delicious cinnamon bun in a cookie...

I instantly ripped into the package the moment I got home. Right off the bat, before I even touched a cookie I knew that they were going to be good. The smell of them literally filled the room. Was someone cooking cinnamon buns before I walked in? Nope, the mad scientists behind the flavors at Nabisco had just nailed the smell. Bravo gents, but the real test is the taste test...

The cookie part reminds me a lot of the cookies from the Gingerbread Oreos. They are crunchy and bursting with cinnamon flavor. But the creme? The CREME. That is where the magic happens.

Yes they have somehow nailed the flavor of cinnamon bun icing perfectly. That, combined with the cinnamon cookie ends up being an awesome Oreo version of a cinnamon bun. They definitely hit the flavor right on the head with these.  Another good thing is that they seem to have a plentiful amount of the creme in each cookie. It definitely seemed to be more than a regular Oreo, but not quite as much as a Double Stuf.  Damn, is it good! 

If there was one change I would make to Cinnamon Bun Oreo cookies, it might be to put a cinnamon swirl there, just for the gimmick. Imagine the icing in the middle swirled with cinnamon? It would be great. Or perhaps if they had gotten the Cinnabon license? That would be incredible. 

But honestly, that's grasping at straws. The first new flavor of Oreo out the gate in 2016 has set the bar high. Cinnamon Bun Oreos get an A from me. Get out there and get some before they are gone!

Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy cookies!

Hot cocoa is kind of a weird flavoring that has gotten more and more popular over the past few years. I mean, as cocoa, it's always been popular, right? But recently we've seen companies make hot cocoa (or hot chocolate, whichever way you say it) start using this as it's own stand alone flavor. Edys has a hot cocoa ice cream, M&M's have a hot chocolate flavor, and even those gross marshmallow abominations, Peeps have a hot cocoa version. So it was only a matter of time before the cookie game got wise to this fad and so we find ourselves about to review the limited edition, Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy Cookies! 

First off, I'll be honest, like I am every time I get stuck reviewing Chips Ahoy cookies. They usually aren't that good. Come on! You all know it. They are weird little discs of sweet chemicals. No part of them taste like they actually came from food. But somehow they are still a popular name in cookies. People like weird fake stuff! Well, I'm sad to tell you, these really don't break the mold.

These are basically the same old chocolate Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies. BUT this time around they added some weird hot cocoa flavored cream in the middle, and in addition to chocolate chips, now the cookies also have little mini marshmallows. In case you're wondering, no, they aren't normal marshmallows, they are the strange kind that come in hot cocoa. The crunchy, almost Lucky Charms type marshmallows. 

These aren't terrible. They are tiny so you can pop one in your mouth. It has a slight crunch to it from the marshmallows and the cream inside definitely helps smooth it out. But after about three or four I put them away unimpressed. Do they taste like hot cocoa? Yeah they do nail the flavor pretty well. But how weird is that? These are flavored like a drink that was made to artificially taste like chocolate. So this is an artificially flavored cookie, flavored like a drink that's flavored like chocolate. Mind blowing stuff right there.

But a day or two later when I grabbed the bag to give these a second go 'round, I noticed a little blurb on the bag telling you to heat them up in the microwave for a treat. I'm always up for a treat so I popped a few in. They say 6-7 seconds. My microwave laughed at that and I left them in for about 20. As I figured, this improved them greatly.

Much like the time we roasted Chips Ahoy over a camp fire, these instantly jumped up a couple letter grades with a little bit of heat. Suddenly they were melting and gooey and felt more like a real cookie.  In fact, if you find yourself buying a bag of these to experience them for yourself, please put the entire package in the microwave and eat them like that. You'll thank me.

In the end I have to say I wasn't very impressed by Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy. They nailed the flavor, but they still just aren't great. Heated up they were definitely better, but I think I would rather take the money from this package of cookies and buy one REALLY good cookie from a local bakery instead.

S'mores Oreo cookies!

If a month goes by and we don't have a new flavor of Oreo cookies to review, I think something is wrong with the world. It sends me into a panic. Is Nabisco going under? Has someone toppled this cookie giant? Is the sky falling? WHERE IS THE NEAREST BOMB SHELTER?! It goes something like that. Luckily this time around I didn't have to ride that emotional roller coaster because ol' Nabisco just dumped its latest limited edition flavor in our laps, just in time for those summer camping trips. S'MORES OREOS!

This package just makes me want a real S'more. Look at that thing! 

So what are we dealing with here? Well it's a graham flavored cookie for starters. I'm glad they didn't cheap out on this and just make this out of Golden Oreo's. The graham cookie actually does taste like a graham cracker, but with that familiar Oreo crunch.  Inside lies waiting for you both chocolate and marshmallow creme.  Fun fact, nine times out of ten that you try to open these up to look at the creme, it comes apart so you're looking at the white/marshmallow side. It's a fun science experiment you can try at home. But back to the creme, it's what you expect. The usual Oreo chocolate creme and then the marshmallow that is a lot like the creme they had in their Marshmallow Crispy Oreo's but without the crispy part.

They definitely capture a fake s'more taste and they are about as great as an Oreo s'more cookie could be. But I always wonder if companies miss one important ingredient when trying to flavor something like S'more. The smoke. If you're making a real s'more over a fire, the marshmallow is always going to have a little smoky flavor to it. I think the next company to make something s'more flavored needs to take my advice and add that. Graham, chocolate, marshmallow and smoke. Nothing brings a wave of nostalgia like a waft of campfire smoke. Am I right?

Will these cookies replace the original s'more? Nope. Are they worth trying out as the latest of Oreo's limited edition flavors? 100%. Seriously. Scoop these up before they are gone. We had a rough time finding them ourselves. But definitely give them a try. Heck, if you've got a fire going outside one of these nights, perhaps even slap a melty marshmallow between two of these. I bet that would be faaaaaantastic.

We are giving S'mores Oreo cookies a B!  FYI: if the package had been normal size instead of these ridiculous mini-packs we would have upped that to a B+!
