Pumpkin Spice Er'Thang: Cheerios, Special K, and Frosted Mini Wheats

I walked into my local Market Basket, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught a little something new.

Now what in the good Christ is Cheerios doing messing with pumpkin spice? I wasn't sure, but I was damn sure this food blogger was going to find out. Now you'd think that'd be enough, but by the time my short little legs were carrying my bebopping, whistling face out the front door, I had discovered that not only was Cheerios not alone, they had roped in some heavy hitters to join in the pumkin spice craze.

SO me and the GF decided to forgo a real dinner, and go through and pour a bowl of each!

First up, I decided to go with a cereal I remember liking quite a bit when I was going through that 20 something cereal phase. Hey sometimes you've got to try something other than Reeses Puffs.

These things were pretty much what you'd expect. That hint of pumpkin, wrapped up with a thin frosting taste, and depending on how long you let it sit in the cereal, a solid crunch, or a mouthful of wet wiggly wheat strands. I think what held this together so well was the "frost", that sugary cool blast of what MIGHT rest somewhere in the marshmallow family.

As a man who doesn't really like ginger anything (besides ale) I was bummed when I read that it was a main component of this cereal. Special K is never that good unless it's overloaded with freeze dried fruit!

Looks like chunks of cardboard, but in all actuality, this cereal was pretty damn good. As a dry option, it didn't really work. What was needed for this to sing, was all of the elements working together. There was that nice familiar chemical concoction that is whatever pumpkin spice is, and then within that, the little cinnamon cluster blasts really helped make the overall flavor of this cereal taste decent.

Last on the list, Cheerios.

I know most people either love or hate Cheerios.  I've always enjoyed a bowl or two of the breakfast classic, but this time, this time was very different.

Tasting these dry is like eating those packing peanuts that you get that are "edible". And you only ever eat those on a dare, or if you never have, you pop them in your mouth, waiting for them to be absolutely disgusting, and they aren't, but don't taste good either.

Now the real test, in milk, these were absolutely horrid. They taste like a blander Cheerio covered in pepper, rolled in dirt. There is only one person on the planet that would think these are good.

These are the worst Cheerios I've ever consumed. The only time they've altered Cheerios, and it's been edible, is when they decided to make honey-nut. Every other iteration of the Cheerio is like a wretched lesson they are trying to teach children by making the most foul tasting cereal they can. A cruel joke on children around the globe.

Out of the three, I'd have to say the Pumkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats were the star of the new line of fad cereals this fall, with a solid runner up trophy going to Special K. This year, pumpkin spice came out so hard it has effectively twisted it's chassis off the line.

I don't know where this is going to go, but hopefully we can trim some of the fat, and let horrible things like pumpkin spice Cheerios fall down to cereal hell where Paul Walker can enjoy their bland, peppery flavor for eternity.

Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats: B
Pumpkin Spice Special K: C
Pumpkin Spice Cheerios: a HARD F.

Kellog's Jif Peanut Butter Cereal!

If you've ever read a post here on Fatguyfoodblog, chances are you know that if there's one thing we love, it's peanut butter. We never stop running our mouths about whatever new snack has a peanut butter version, from Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Oreo's to Any new Ben & Jerry's that has a peanut butter swirl in it. Well when I heard that Kellogs was releasing a JIF cereal I practically sprinted out of my house and down the street like Forest Gump.

That being said, when I got to the store they didn't have them. Nor did they have them in any other store in our area, until finally one day I got lucky. So here's our review of the new Jif Peanut Butter Cereal!

First thing I noticed when I cracked that box open is the peanut buttery aroma that wafted out. Alright, Jif cereal, you've got my attention. The cereal pieces themselves are a little square with the center cut out. Nothing too special there. Of course I popped a few in my mouth to see how they were dry. Was I blown away? Not really. My first thought is that they kind of taste like the non-marshmallow pieces in Lucky Charms, but covered in a sweet powdery peanut butter flavor. Tasty, but nothing to write home about.

So I poured a bowl so big that would even make the Rock's eyes go wide on his epic cheat day, and added a healthy portion of milk. Now here is where Jif cereal really shines. When the milk and cereal meet, it really brings out the peanut butter flavor in the cereal. I like to think that powder coating on the cereal pieces mixes with the milk to make it seem almost like some of the cereal has actual peanut butter on it. Needless to say, I took down this giant bowl with great ease. For a few moments my legendary hunger for all things peanut butter was calmed. But when that time was up, I took a stroll to the kitchen for another bowl. Yep, it's that good.

In the end I would have to say if you're a peanut butter lover, there's no reason you shouldn't be running out to score a box of Jif cereal. It's decent to eat as a snack, dry, but man, when you add the milk it skyrockets to the front of the pack of peanut butter cereals. Is it as good as Cap'n Crunch's Peanut Butter Crunch? Reeses Puffs? I'm not sure where it lies in the list of peanut butter cereals because I didn't have them all on hand to try. I realize now that I have failed you as a food blogger as far as this goes. BUT, I'm still telling you this is a delicious peanut buttery cereal that you should probably jam your mouth full of, as soon as possible.
I give Jif Peanut Butter Cereal a solid A!

Cap'n Crunch's Sprinkled Donut Crunch!

Despite being over the age of 30, I have to say, I still eat Captain Crunch on a regular basis. Sometimes I mix it up and get a box of Crunch Berries or Peanut Butter Crunch too. I'm not that picky when it comes to the Crunch family. I know I can count on any one of them to become my irresponsible late night adult dinner at anytime. But here and there the Cap'n will try something different. Sometimes these are great, and sometimes not so much. But when I stumbled upon Sprinkled Donut Crunch in the supermarket the other day, I knew I would at least have to give it a try. I owe the Cap'n that much. We have a long and storied past.

Apparently the Cap'n now has the power to shoot sprinkles from his hands?

So if I'm reading this right, it's supposed to be a sweet breakfast cereal that tastes like frosted donuts with sprinkles. I can't say it's a bad taste for a cereal to try to mimic. But does it ACTUALLY taste like that? Well...kinda. I dove right in and poured myself a massive bowl. I don't play around with tiny plastic bowls. I need a monster bowl that I can pour a quarter of a box of cereal into. I also need it to be glass because when you write for the most popular snack blog in the history of the human race, you gotta snap those pictures! So I need to be able to see the colors the milk is changing. I need to see what sort of debris is collecting on the bottom. Luckily I scored these bowls a few years back. They are perfect.

Like any other Cap'n Crunch cereal, they are pretty solid before you hit them with milk. Those of you who have weak mouths that get shredded by the Cap'ns cereal will find the same thing happening with Sprinkled Donut Crunch. Those of you who aren't massive wimps, who's gums can stand up to eating a simple breakfast cereal without ripping like tissue paper, shouldn't have any problems. But once submerged in milk, they soften up nicely. Ol' Grandma can slurp them up with her dentures out if you leave them sitting in milk for a good ten minutes.

Up close they look kinda sloppy.
Did they taste like donuts? Yeah. I mean, as much as a piece of cereal could. At first you think it might just be a regular sweet cereal taste, but then after a moment you realize that, yeah it does taste a bit like a donut. Enough to base a cereal around it? Maybe not. I enjoyed the flavor but in the end I think I would rather have a bowl of original Cap'n Crunch with a donut on the side.

Bottom line, I give Cap'n Crunch's Sprinkled Donut Crunch a C+. Nothing special, but not terrible. If you scoop up a box, you'll finish it, but you won't rush to the store to stock your cabinets before this limited flavor is gone forever.

Chocolate Toast Crunch!

Over the last few years a lot of cereal companies have dropped the ball. They put out the same old boring flavors of the same old boring cereals that they have been putting out for twenty years, and seem to be okay with that. But there's a chosen few who embrace innovation and try to blow our minds with new flavors as often as possible. At the forefront of this are the geniuses behind Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Over the past couple years they have put out gems like Frosted Toast Crunch & Peanut Butter Toast Crunch. So it was only a matter of time before they broke out the chocolate. Ladies & Gents, I give you...
CHOCOLATE TOAST CRUNCH.

That's one happy piece of cereal!
Before we get to actually talking about the cereal, let's take a moment to think about how ridiculous this cereal is. Cinnamon Toast? That's a thing. Peanut Butter Toast? Yup. I eat it practically every other day. But Chocolate Toast? Who has that? Nobody. The closest thing I can think of is putting Nutella on toast, which is freakin' awesome, but this isn't called Nutella Toast Crunch (PLEASE MAKE THIS A THING, GENERAL MILLS!). But in the end, who the hell cares. All I want is a tasty cereal to eat a giant bowl of on those nights where I don't feel like cooking, and boy did this deliver!

Ol' Wendell doesn't skimp on that chocolate dust!
I'm going to lay it out pretty easily to you. If you like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and you like chocolate, you're going to go bonkers for this cereal. I'm not sure if the flakes are the same, and just covered with a ridiculous amount of this weird sugary chocolate dust. I tried to figure it out, but there were so covered that I couldn't tell. Also I just gave up, so I could eat more of it. It's that good.  It also has a much better chocolate taste than a lot of of other chocolate cereals. It might be the strange sugar/chocolate hybrid.. It might be the combination of that, and the beloved CTC flakes. Hell, it might be magic. All I know is that it's delicious. It's kind of like this:

This is called pure happiness.

It also does an excellent job of giving you a nice bowl of chocolate milk to swig down after you're done spooning up every last morsel of cereal.  Normally I might take a swig or two, but with this, I took the entire bowl down!

By the end of the bowl that milk is straight up chocolate!
The bottom line is that it's damned good. Chocolate lovers, you're in for a treat. Most people my age wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole. I listen to them squawk about how they eat one cup of Special K and half of a grapefruit for breakfast. Meanwhile I have a bowl of Chocolate Toast Crunch, and a pile of crispy bacon starting out my day. So if you're a health nut, you are probably just reading this blog so you can live vicariously through it. I appreciate that! But if you're like me, and you aren't a stranger to taking down a box of cereal in three sittings, then this stuff might be for you.

I give this limited edition, chocolate version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch a solid A. Get a box while you can, because it could vanish at any moment...FOREVER.

Cap'n Crunch Snack Mix, Chocolatey Peanut Butter & Sweet & Salty Caramel!

When I was a kid, almost every kind of cereal had a mascot that was known and loved. Toucan Sam, the Trix Rabbit, Snap, Crackle, and Pop, Sugar Bear, Tony the Tiger, Lucky the Leprechaun...the list went on and on. As the years go by, more and more of them vanish from the public eye. We won't even get into the conspiracy theories surrounding the Cinnamon Toast Crunch chefs. But one cereal mascot who has never faltered for a moment and is still as well known as ever, is Cap'n Crunch.

Not only does he still rock all of his classic flavors, but he also comes out with seasonal favorites like Halloween Crunch & Christmas Crunch. Let's not even get into Oop's All Berries(apparently there was a mishap at the Cap'n Crunch factory, you see), one of the greatest cereals you could ever get your grubby mitts on. This wasn't enough though. Now in 2013 the Cap'n has decided to sail the seven seas of snacking, by debuting the first two flavors in his new line of Snack Mix!

First up is the Chocolatey Peanut Butter...

Being a peanut butter fanatic, I've long loved Peanut Butter Crunch. I remember many times talking my mother into getting that instead of some healthy cereal while standing in the supermarket. I'd like to think that my arguments were on par with Tom Cruise in a Few Good Men. But most likely she just wanted me to shut up and the quickest way for that to happen was to let me jam my head full of peanut buttery cereal. But the snack mix boasts not only pieces of Peanut Butter Crunch, but also chocolate coated pretzels, pieces of Cap'n Crunch's Chocolatey Crunch, and "Candy coated peanut flavored drops" which I guess are kinda just weird M&M's. So how was it?

Well. It was just okay. It really felt like it was missing something. That it was a bunch of similar flavors that melded together into a crunchy sweet mouthful of different textures. I think it would have been better if the pretzels had been a bit saltier, or if the fake M&M's had been Reeses Pieces knockoffs. The strong peanut butter flavor of those might have pushed these over the top but as it stands right now, pretty unexciting. A huge disappointment for the Fatguyfoodblogs resident Peanut Butter lover.
I'd give these a C. Not bad, but nothing special, and could have been amazing. If a buddy tosses a bag your way, give it a try, but should you run to the store right now for a bag? I wouldn't.
However...you might want to run out for a bag of...

Cap'n Crunch's Sweet & Salty Caramel Snack Mix! Now this...this one is a different story. I enjoyed this one a lot. It's packed with not only the regular Cap'n Crunch & Chocolatey Crunch pieces, but also Caramel Corn, Fake M&M's and Caramel glazed pretzel balls. Sweet & Salty is always a good combination. Always. That's why this one excels far above and beyond the other flavor.

Think about it. Caramel corn, Cap'n Crunch and a fake M&M...how could you go wrong? The only weird part to this mix is the caramel glazed pretzel balls. They are delicious, buttery toffee flavored. Absolutely awesome. If you let them slowly melt in your mouth. However, if you decide to just bite it in half, it' feels like you'll be spitting out a mouth full of tooth shards because they are so hard. Every time one bursts open it feels like you just shattered your jaw. But if you take your time with them, they become the best part of the mix!
I give these a solid B+!

In the end, I'm glad the Cap'n did this little experiment. I enjoyed them both, although The Sweet & Salty Caramel was the winner by leaps and bounds. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme Breakfast Cereal

If you're a man of carriage, the notion of Hershey's for breakfast is no stranger to your brain. Instead of feeling guilty and sad while you have chocolate smeared all of your fingers and face right after you awoke around 11am, now you can click your heels with glee, and stand proud that it wasn't only you who wanted it. So many people did in fact, they created cereal to celebrate it. May I bring to you Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme Cereal:

i'm never sure why they replace the word and with 'n'
Nothing says summer like Hershey's, so I took to the great outdoors (our porch) to do this cereal review.

1% all the way!

Alone the cereal bits are good. Your standard cocoa cereal but mixed with this odd, not so creamy white corn puff, with a HINT of what tastes like creme from the middle of an Oreo! We all know that's ridiculous, but maybe it's Hershey's subtle jab at Oreo, still bitter from the 1992 GM & Nabisco fallout. What you don't know about that? Read a book eh?

Hypno-Cereal
With milk poured atop these, the merger of both of these flavored sweet whole grain corn puffs comes together in a symphony of flavor. The chocolate, still a standby chocolate flavor similar to Cocoa Puffs is emboldened by this sweet creamy after taste, and tastes like cookies and cream ice cream with a crunch.

This cereal is absolutely stellar. Each bite was delicious, and even as the bowl waned on, the flavors didn't lose their punch, and the cereal didn't lose its crunch. Typically with a cereal like that, it cuts your mouth to shreds, thus would have effectively made this Hershey's Cookie's 'n' Creme 'n' Blood. But that was not the case, slight amount of mouth soreness but easily dismissed. The ONE problem with this cereal, if I had to come up with anything, would be the milk after drink, a staple to most cereals, is basically non existent. Who knows how they could fix this, but I'm sure a cereal scientist is sitting here reading this blog, and just slammed his fist on the table and yelled to his colleagues "I KNEW IT WAS GONNA BE A PROBLEM!"

I give this decadent breakfast offering a B. It's great, but didn't blow my hair off my head or shoe's off my feet. It's a solid cereal and I'd definitely recommend picking up a box and sending your kid to school buzzed out of his mind on a bowl of this cookie 'n' creme gold.

Kellogg's Cinnamon Jacks

It's a standard family breakfast setting, mom at the sink, making pancakes, smiling as the children run in with their book bags sitting down, excited for the breakfast to come. Dad sipping a coffee, acknowledging the children's joy over his morning paper. Mom walks around from the counter with plates filled with pancakes and places them in front of the children. The two kids, a boy and a girl, look at each other, their disappointment visible as they slowly grab a fork and go to take a half hearted bite into the prepared food. When all of a sudden from the breezeway a gust of warm air blasts into the kitchen, the curtains flail back, Dad's paper bends towards his face as Mom's hair is flying backwards, then you hear "AHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY TIRED OF DA SAME OD BREK FAST MON? TAKE BREK FEEST TO A WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL STAR" and in comes Kellogg's mascot for the new cereal Cinnamon Jacks. The kid's eyes light up as a giant Cinnamon Stick with dreadlocks and a Jamaican hat pours bowls of this new cereal down for the children. The wind is still blowing as palm trees and other Jamaican cinnamon sticks are playing the steal drums behind the parents, who are now having a good time, and another cinnamon stick presents them with some fruity adult beverage.

I guess I understand. In a world where there's a mascot for everything, it was only a matter of time before the Cinna-Mon, and his golden eyebrow piercing, made his way into our homes.

When you open the box of Cinnamon Jacks, you don't exactly smell cinnamon. It's there, like a faint cinnamon ghost is haunting the box, too weak to be able to get any actual smell in there. That kind of sets up the tone of the whole cereal. I kind of expected to get blasted with a puff of weed smoke when I opened the box, maybe in Colorado?

Cinnamon Jacks has two tiers to it. The first being the crunch tier, where it's a typical corn based cereal, which you'd swear to ANYTHING that it was just Apple Jacks. They even cut your mouth the same way. But then on the second tier, where you get a good amount of sog, the ghost of Cinna-Mon's father rears his head and decided it's time to reveal himself to the world. Not that the cinnamon flavor is really too much different, you just get to actually taste some of it that's been hiding inside the cut up bits of painful ceramic tiles they call "Jacks".

This cereal is ok, I don't think it warrants an endless loop of me eating it, but I took the picture and now we're all stuck with it. The best part of the cereal is the mascot, which I guess is the only thing that matters to Big Cereal. It sold me, but I won't be picking this up again.
I give Cinnamon Jacks a

Peanut Butter Toast Crunch!

If you're like most people, you consider Cinnamon Toast Crunch to be near the top of the Breakfast cereal food chain. It's simply one of the best. Always has been, always will be. Except for that little window of time when they released a reduced sugar version. It was so gross that it prompted a myspace blog entry from me years before food blogging was ever even in my brain. Yes I said myspace. Over the years we've gotten some different versions & limited editions of CTC. But it always seemed like there was one they were forgetting.
ENTER: PEANUT BUTTER TOAST CRUNCH.

At Fatguyfoodblog, it's well documented that we are peanut butter crazy. If a snack or candy doesn't have a peanut butter version, THEY ARE FAILING AT WHAT THEY DO!
Well our pal Wendell the baker finally got off his ass and whipped up a new recipe for his beloved cereal. This time it's loaded with peanut buttery goodness.
But let's digress a moment and talk about something else. What ever happened to the other two bakers?
Just three buddies who liked to bake cereal...

A quick Internet search tells me their names could have been Bob & Quello (wtf?) but I also found another quote from General Mills saying they never had names. Interesting. Sounds like a cover-up to me. Seems like ol' Wendell wanted the spotlight, so he made the other two vanish. Not so hard to believe when you realize how crazy looking Wendell got at some points over the years...

Clearly a murderer.

Ah well. The case is cold. Nothing we can do about it now. So let's talk about cereal! Peanut Butter Toast Crunch is...EXCELLENT. From the moment you tear open the box your nostrils are bombarded by a distinct peanut butter aroma. It will definitely make you raise your eyebrows.

The flakes seem to be slightly crunchier than the usual Cinnamon Toast Crunch Flake, maybe even a step towards a Golden Graham. But then covered in peanut butter, and sprinkled with that signature Cinnamon Sugar. If you're a peanut butter lover, you might want to savor them, eat them right out of the box, one flake at a time. You won't be sorry.

Drown em' in milk! They are faaaaaantastic.
Dump your favorite kind of milk all over them, and eat them right away. They are a peanut butter breakfast explosion. When you're finished, you're left with a strange peanut butter flavored milk, which isn't too bad at all. Don't let them sit too long in the milk though, much like their brother, CTC, these will get weird and soggy. Eventually to the point where the milk strips all flavor from the flakes and they are kinda gross. But let's face it, who leaves their cereal sitting that long on purpose anyway?

I'd say in all, Peanut Butter Toast crunch is everything a peanut butter lover could ever want in a cereal. Go get yourself a few boxes today. Yeah I said a few. I've already gone through two in a week. They won't be around forever!

I give Peanut Butter Toast Crunch an A!

MINI POST: Choco Zucaritas / Chocolate Frosted Flakes

thanks to theothersideofthetortilla.com for the pic!
To be honest, I'm fairly ignorant to the ways and customs of our brothers to the south. I'm glad to see El Tonyo El Tigre smashing the barriers and celebrating Mexican culture by releasing Choco Zucaritas! Now, I MAY BE WRONG, but I'm pretty sure NUEVO means "steal" and Zucaritas means "the exact flavor from Cocoa Krispies" because that's exactly what the chocolate tsunami behind El Tigre, or should I say LA TIGRA (little spanish humor there) did.

The Cereal is actually not bad, Cocoa Krispies, and I'm cool with a flake version of it so, hey, why not!

no feet of rival gang members here!
I give this a:
B
mediocre, but, still has the good chocolate taste instead of the gross poison chocolate you'd see from genero brands

Frosted Toast Crunch

Every single one of us knows the exact time when we realized Cinnamon Toast Crunch was the best cereal on the planet. Steadfast in flavor, hearty in sweetness, CTC (as I will so lovingly refer to it as from now on) delivered with every single bowl you poured. EVERY. SINGLE. BOWL. As a constant in the sugary cereal lineup, you could always look back and at the old friend and deliver a wink to those loveable bakers, even the often time bumbling Wendell, while you tried your taste buds on inferior breakfast flavors.

Imagine my astonishment when I saw CTC, venture into unknown territory and add this Frosted concoction to an already perfect recipe for mini cereal toasts.

Wendell you GENIUS!

Upon opening this blue treasure chest, the sweet vanilla aroma filled the air. A blissful sugary perfume danced about my nostrils. I can only hope my 72 Virgins that await me after I blast myself to hell for Allah, would slather this scent on their bodies.

Ancient Astronaut theorists believe that FTC may have been offered to the Alien Gods

This cereal was fantastic. I do think that the folks at General Mills knew when they were concocting such a magnificent cereal, it would be too much for mere mortal man to handle, and with a heavy heart, they dialed back the flavors so that us, men of the planet earth, may be able to partake in a food fit for a god king.

Biting into a spoonfull of FTC was great, cereal had the appropriate amount of sog that you expect from CTC but the vanilla dusting that was meant to be showcased in this experiment, ended up drowning out most of the cinnamon, and tasted more like a weak marshmallow flavor. Which in all aspects is still fantastic, but FTC just doesn't deliver the same punch as the Alpha Cereal Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

somebody get me a scarf, it's frosty in here! no? ok...well. i tried.

Overall a solid offering in the cereal department, good for a simple man, who just wants to wake up from a hard night of sleep apnea choking, and enjoy a bowl of vanilla, marshmallowy faint flavorness.

I GIVE THIS BREAKFAST OFFERING TO JEHOVAH:
B
you performed well my friend. thanks for the try Wendell!
