Ben & Jerry's Minter Wonderland

Well it's been a long time eh?  Fuck it! Let's just review some food shall we?

If you have a girlfriend who likes to walk up and down every single aisle of your local Target like I do, you know that burning hot ember of rage that fills inside you, that then twists into agony, your eyes darting back and forth hoping that the next aisle has something you can stab into your own face and end the suffering once and for all. Well I'm here to inform you fellow occupants of hell, there's something located in the freezer aisle that, hopefully, will douse that all consuming rage, and will sooth your soul from that 666 mile journey,  just a little bit.

As a long time lover of mint anything, I shrieked when I gazed upon this Target exclusive. I was pretty excited to peel off that horseshit wrapping they tie up pints of B&J's in, so after a few minutes of trying with my hands, I took out the trusty pocketknife and revealed this.

Now looking at this, and thinking of what your classically favorite ice creams look like, you're probably

But rest easy my friends, what this ice cream lacks with it's visual austerity, it makes up for with its giant taste. Within the black maw of what seemingly is an empty void of flavor, ribbons of marshmallow flow throughout the cosmic ecosystem of chocolate, weaving in between giant black ribbons of chocolate cookie flavor waves, surfed by your silver spoon, searching through this place to appease your giant, world devouring hunger.

This ice cream is stellar, and as you can see, it doesn't have the hype of needing 8000 other candies and treats to be smashed up within it, it doesn't need some boomer enticing name of a failing late night talk show or a band no one really likes to sell this. The foundation on which this ice cream is built is so solid, you could build a home on it and expect it to last for generations of nuclear attacks.  I'm very pleased to have tried this, and I will definitely pick another pint or 3 up if I can somehow figure out how to survive another 5 hour Target trip without bashing my brains on the seasonal aisle floor.

I give Ben & Jerry's Minter Wonderland an
A+
for giving us working men an ice cream to sit back,
kick our feet up, and watch exposed breasts on HBO
before it's time to go to bed.

Ben & Jerry's NEW Coconuts for Caramel CORE

I know Ben & Jerry's.
You know Ben and/or Jerry.
We all know Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and how they've consistently found new and intriguing ways to sell us various flavored ice creams. I'm pumped to try this, as I'm sure we all are whenever we swipe a new delicious flavor out that ice cold freezer. So let's get to this, and see if this is worth you trading your hard earned, factory sweat soaked cash in for.

That's a hell of a roll call!
Caramel and Sweet Cream Coconut ice cream with fudge flakes and a caramel core. As soon as the plastic top holder thing started krinkling, I got a friend who was suddenly interested in what was in my hands.

Now with the top popped. We can see a giant glob of caramel. Remember this, this comes into play later. Jot it down in your official FatGuyFoodBlog Review Notepad™.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting, maybe I didn't fully read the pint print, but I was perplexed by the two different kinds of ice cream inside the thing.

digging under the first clump of caramel

then my eyes got wider

and then shot out of my head, killing the neighbors doing yard work next door

The Fudge flakes in this thing were flat out huge chocolate chips within a THICK coconut shaving filled ice cream. The caramel ice cream portion was smooth, and not as caramel flavored as one would expect, but they more than make up for it with that well of caramel thickness right there in the middle.  The coconut flavor and shavings were almost overwhelming if you didn't grab a scoop of caramel ice cream, and a healthy glob of caramel core. I often times sit down with a Ben & Jerry's and cap it after a good one quarter is gone, but this one, this one I legit had a hard time putting down. And I know what you're thinking "Josh, you're a hard hitting action food blogger with millions of hits a month living off the teat of google royalty checks, you're probably just saying that." All those things are true, however, I found myself scarfing this down and actually being kind of worried. In my foggy haze, blasted off of Ben & Jerry's, I found myself wondering, "is this what addiction feels like?" So I capped it after a good 3/4's before I ended up washing myself with a rag on a stick.

Hey remember that giant mass of caramel that basically filled the top of my pint like a good barista does with whipped cream on a latte? I also was trying to remember where it went, and it must have disappeared early, because part of my insane shoveling was due to me trying to find another caramel gold deposit. What was the promise of a giant, ever flowing spring of delicious caramel, ended up just being a weeping butthole of brown candy, which I was desperately digging at like I'd been locked up in prison for a decade.

Other than, what was clearly a factory mistake, Ben & Jerry's Coconuts for Caramel was fantastic and did exactly what it claimed it was going to do. Tease you with the promise of a good time, and you just go home with an under the pants handy. I'm not gonna complain, you rule, but, you know.

I give Ben & Jerry's a B. Delicious by all rights,
but gets overshadowed by what possibly cannot be overshadowed.

Cold Stone Creamery's New Blueberry Donut Shake!

Cold Stone doesn’t get the respect it deserves. With so many options it gets lost in the shuffle.  Did you know you can get a funnel cake topped with ice cream there? Perhaps you’d be interested in a Churro Caramel CraveTM  instead?? Into dad jokes and bad puns? Try the Cookie Dougn’t You Want Some or The Pie Who Loved Me. They’re nothing if not creative. Which brings me to their newest delicious creation.

I’ve dipped French fries in milk shakes and blended full cake slices with milk shakes. I’ve stirred around bowls of ice cream until they transform into a warm shake. But never have I ever replaced the traditional, and now passé, cherry on top WITH A FULL FREAKING DOUGHNUT.

I tip my hat to the gluttonous culinary artist that devised this creation. Bravo.

Yes, that’s approximately ¾ of a blueberry donut used as a garnish. And it is beautiful. I dipped mine in the whipped cream and it right off the bat as an appetizer. The donut, while not super fresh, was still tasty. I scarfed it down quickly so the freshness/flavor wasn’t really a factor. The shake itself was perfectly sweet, creamy, and rich. The handful of blueberries added a burst of fresh flavor and made it healthy?

Cold Stone’s new Blueberry Donut Shake is a marvel and definitely worth a trip. They nailed the blueberry doughnut flavor. How about a chocolate cake donut flavor next?

I award an A for having a delectable viscosity and for being healthy (because of the blueberries?)

Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter & Cookies!

Every time I start thinking it's been a while since I've seen a new Ben & Jerry's flavor, I end up looking in the freezer section the next time I'm in a supermarket and end up finding one. That's exactly what happened with their new limited batch, Peanut Butter & Cookies. I had just gotten done talking to one of the fellow writers of this very website when this one jumped out at me and you can bet I bought it without a second thought!

Sounds so good, right?

Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter & Cookies boasts Sweet Cream Ice cream with chocolate sandwich cookies and a crunchy peanut butter swirl. So basically, everything awesome that you could ever want in an ice cream, right? Alright, maybe not EVERYTHING. But still. Sounds pretty solid! If it's half as good as Milk & Cookies it will be a home run for sure! (If you've never tried Milk & Cookies, take a quick look at this review from the FGFB archives by our ex-writer Mike. God bless his poor soul.)

After peeling the lid off, things were looking good. It definitely looked like Milk & Cookies, but with some peanut butter swirls. The best part of Milk & Cookies is that there was no bite that was just ice cream. Every single inch of that ice cream was loaded with cookie crumbs. This looked the same!

Looks like I'm trying to sip it like fine wine.

You can almost see the wonder in my eyes. I was so sure that this was going to be incredible. Everything my cookie and peanut butter loving brain could ever want. But, alas, I was wrong. Peanut Butter & Cookies was actually not that good at all. What was the problem? The "chocolate sandwich cookies", that's what. The actual ice cream was okay and the crunchy peanut butter swirl was tasty and added a nice crunch here and there, as well as some saltiness to battle against the sweet. But those cookies are TERRIBLE. I literally unearthed an entire cookie in the middle of this pint. It hadn't been smashed or shredded or anything. The entire thing was there like some Mayan artifact dug up by a gang of thieves in the jungle. I stared at it in awe but when I spooned it into my mouth I might as well have popped a cleverly disguised piece of cardboard in there instead. Bland. Barely any taste at all. Then I realized that all the cookie pieces were like this.  Those cookie pieces that are in every single bite.

If you look back through our history with Ben & Jerry's flavors, there are very few that we've ever given bad reviews. We love those guys. But this time there's no saving it. I, for one, am happy this is a limited batch because it doesn't deserve to stick around. I would say bypass giving this one a try and grab up one of your old favorites instead, like Chubby Hubby, or Phish Food! Otherwise you're going to get a generic sweet ice cream with salty peanut butter swirls and big gobs of tasteless fake cookies.
Hey Ben, Jerry, I know you're trying to save a few bucks on ingredients and all, but I know some guys over at Nabisco who do a pretty good chocolate sandwich cookie. Perhaps you should team up!

Ben & Jerry's Limited Batch: Cake My Day!

Every single time I go to the grocery store, I walk by the ice cream like there's an elderly couple having sex in the middle of the aisle. Not because I don't enjoy it, but because I realize that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. But because of my troubling financial circumstances I recently had to cancel my subscriptions to a few certain websites, and I needed to fill that shameful void somehow- enter Ben and Jerry's Cake My Day.

Well my day was certainly caked... it was... cade... my day was cake... well... uh. The Ben and Jerry's was on sale for $1.99. So the decision to buy this ice cream was a piece of cake!!! Yeah, knew I'd find that sooner or later. Anyway, Ben and Jerry's pints for $1.99. Sometimes, Shaw's and Star Market just has unbelievably stupid deals on these pints. If you've got one in your 'hood, keep your eyes peeled. I was going to take a picture of the sign but I didn't think of it soon enough and the sale ended, so you're going to have to just believe me here. And if you don't, then why are you getting your food reviews from a source you've deemed untrustworthy? Like there's not enough pictures of cats on the Internet to keep you busy for five minutes, and you're just browsing through shady food reviews. Go outside.

Ben and Jerry's Cake My Day will Cake Your Day the Fuck Up (TM). This ice cream tastes more like cake then it does it does ice cream. It tastes more like cake then fucking cake does. Cake is actually suing Ben and Jerry's right now, and I'm a star witness. Tom Carvel tasted it and hung himself. The Friendly's closest to your house is now a Mexican restaurant.

Why does it taste so much like cake? Because it's a vanilla cake batter ice cream with vanilla cake pieces and butter cream frosting and raspberry swirls. Observant readers may note that the raspberry swirls in the last sentence is smaller than the other words in the same sentence. Totally intentional!! This Ben and Jerry's flavor could use more raspberry swirls, or some chocolate fudge pieces or macadamia nuts or just pretty much anything else. Because it just tastes like vanilla cake I left in the freezer for eight months after the most depressing solo birthday party I've ever had but now I'm out of food because I spent all my money on certain websites and there's nothing left to eat! But good news if you like vanilla cake this is definitely the ice cream for you!

I'd probably be doing a disservice to our readers if I didn't mention that the cake pieces actually have the consistency of real cake- no gimmicks there. That being said, I'm going to give this Ben and Jerry's flavor a C+. Guess what the C stands for. Personally, I wouldn't get this again, because I'm not that huge a fan of super sweet flour sugar combinations traditionally combined with a softer flour-free version of more sugar. So we picked the wrong guy to write this review! But that tag line was just too good to give up.

Ben and Jerry's Limited Batch: New Belgium Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale ice cream!

It's been a while since we've been able to get our hands on a limited batch Ben & Jerry's. So long, in fact that when I saw this one in the freezer section I plucked it out so fast that I hadn't even really registered what it was. "SALTED CARAMEL BROWNIE....Wait...BROWN-IE...ALE?" Yep. This is the latest from those insane flavor wizards in Vermont and this just might be THE weirdest flavor they have ever done. But is it good weird, or bad weird? Let's find out. Ladies and Gents, I give you, The Ben and Jerry's New Belgium Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale ice cream!

There's a lot going on with this label. Soak it all in. BEER ICE CREAM.
The idea of beer flavored ice cream is not one that excited me at first. I just couldn't imagine a way that it could be good. I've never taken a sip of a beer and said to myself, "Damn, imagine if there was ice cream flavored like this?" It's just unnatural. But I guess that's what makes ol' Ben and Jerry special because they know how to think outside the box. So they teamed up with Colorado based New Belgium Brewing and created one of the weirdest ice creams ever. This has New Belgium Brown Ale ice cream with fudge brownies and salted caramel swirls. There's a lot going on here and I have to tell you...it's pretty damn good.

Irwin was unsure about it, but in the end he wanted to taste that caramel swirl.
When you first taste the ice cream you really don't taste much of the beer flavor. But a few moments later it hits you as a pleasant aftertaste. Seriously, it's great. Just tasting the ice cream part, it's basically what I would imagine a beer ice cream float would be like. I know people do this, but I have not had a chance to try it so this is a foreign concept to me. Right off the bat I was sold on at least the ice cream itself. Like sweet beer you eat with a spoon! I think this was a great way to do this ice cream because I think beer lovers will enjoy the flavor, but I don't think it's so strong that if you don't enjoy the flavor of beer, you might still REALLY like it.

The Brownie chunks are nothing special. They are those weird, fake, tiny brownie rectangles that you can find in other Ben and Jerry's ice creams.  More like little chewy blobs. But the real star of this show is the Salted Caramel Swirls. Notice that it's "Swirls", plural. Because this ice cream is LOADED with gooey liquid caramel with that noticeable salty tang. Some parts had such massive deposits of it that I had to put some back otherwise entire spoonfuls would have been just that.  Yup, this isn't one of those ice creams that hold back on the ingredients, there's a bounty of brownie chunks and salted caramel to be found in here!

FYI: That caramel goes alllll the way down.
I gotta say, every time I doubt Ben & Jerry's, they somehow blow my mind. I would have liked to have other pictures to go along with this review, but to be honest, I was so into it that the second time I sat down with this pint I finished it off and never looked back. It's that's good! That's why I'm giving it an A! I was weirdest out at the thought of it, but it ends up being a very complex, multi flavored medley that works on every level. I bow to the greater wisdom of the Ben and Jerry's flavor wizards.

Now for those of you who ARE into beer, don't forget the flip side of this! New Belgium actually made the beer version!

This team up between the two companies was to help raise awareness of climate change among the snow sports community through an organization called Protect Our Winters. Sounds like a worthy cause and just shows how awesome both of these companies are. Trying to make the world a better place while taking our taste buds on one hell of a ride. You can bet that the second I spot New Belgium Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale, I'll be picking up a six pack. How could I not?

Magnum Double Peanut Butter ice cream bars!

Have you ever tried a Magnum Ice cream bar? Josh reviewed them when they first came out a while back.  His review was pretty hilarious but in the end he deemed them mediocre. So it was a while before any of us tried the other flavors. Then one day I decided to give the caramel ones a whirl. They changed my life. If you have never tried them, DO IT TODAY. But somehow, we never reviewed them. I think it was because by the time we tried them they were so old that we didn't think anyone would care. But I've eaten them pretty regularly since. Then, our of nowhere, I walk by the ice cream novelties cooler at my local supermarket and I see something that made me do a triple take. Sweet mother of mercy. MAGNUM DOUBLE PEANUT BUTTER ICE CREAM BARS.

Rub that dust out of your eyes, this isn't a mirage!
I nearly broke into a dead run on my way home because I wanted to try these away from the prying eyes of the public. But the moment I walked in I snapped a pic and ripped the box open to give one of these a try. Reading the box it declares that they are peanut butter ice cream dipped in a chocolate coating, then peanut butter sauce and more chocolate coating. Aka: the best thing I've ever heard.

BLINDED BY THE GOLD!
After being mesmerized by the golden wrapper for a straight minute, I snapped out of it and came back to my senses. Being a veteran to the ice cream bar game, I knew that I had to make my first bite small and precise, as to not damage the structural integrity of the bar. I expertly executed the move and my taste buds exploded like every vehicle in Mad Max Fury Road.

BRING BACK THE EMBOSSED M!

The shell melts into a delicious, soft chocolate, followed by the layer of peanut butter sauce that combine for a great sweet and salty sensation. I feel like I might have liked it a bit more if the peanut butter was a little closer to the consistency of the caramel ones, but that's just nit picking. The flavor of those two is damn near perfect. Then you hit another layer of wonderful chocolate shell followed by smooth, creamy peanut butter ice cream. You can eat it layer by layer, or make sure you get a little bit of each part in each bite.  Either way you do it, you'll just close your eyes and lift your face to the heavens while smiling. IT IS THAT GOOD.

It's all about the layers!
If I had to ask Magnum one thing that might enhance this already perfect ice cream bar, it might be for some sort of swirl in the ice cream itself, but that's probably overkill. The Fatguyfoodblog crew are always looking to step things up and that's not always what the situation needs. This is one of those times. I'm giving Magnum Double Peanut Butter ice cream bars an A! That means you need to get them as soon as you can. They are the ice cream equivalent of this:

What a lovely day, indeed.

Ben & Jerry's Limited Batch: Pumpkin Cheesecake!

When you see a Ben & Jerry's Limited Batch, and you are a member of the elite Fatguyfoodblog Crew, you have to buy it. Plain and simple. There's no question in your mind. How can you tell that's true? Well we did review that Cotton Candy one a while back, remember?  So they aren't always flavors we are super excited about. I think this one ends up in that category. When I grabbed a pint at the store I think I even said, "Ehhhh okay fine." and tossed it in my basket. Do I like pumpkin cheesecake? Sure, I suppose I'd have a slice. It wouldn't be my first or second dessert choice, but I'd give it a go. So did this limited batch from our old friend Ben and Jerry surprise us or what?
Let's find out. Ladies & Gent's I give you...
BEN & JERRY'S PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE ICE CREAM!

That cow doesn't seem too sure about this...

Well the first thing you do when you're reviewing any food item is give it a good sniff.  So despite Mike having no interest whatsoever in trying this ice cream, I at least caught him to see what he thought of the aroma.

We're way too close here.
We both agreed that it did indeed have a Pumpkin spice aroma. So far so good. But most pumpkin flavored items end up boasting a big pumpkin flavor, but once you get into it you're really just getting a bunch of fall spices together that make your brain think is pumpkin. Brown sugar, nutmeg,...etc.

Looks like the surface of a far off world.

It didn't look like anything special right off the bat. But the pint let us know it was Pumpkin cheesecake flavored ice cream with graham cracker swirl, I guess I don't know what I would expect that to look like? Orange maybe? No, that would be terrible. But I'll tell you what? This ice cream? EXCELLENT.  It tastes exactly like what you would think pumpkin cheesecake should taste like. And that graham cracker swirl? Out of this world. Like many Ben & Jerry's flavors that have a swirl in them, I found myself mining the pint, following those swirls like a prospector following a vein of gold in the hills of Deadwood back in 1876.  It's that good.

I would say if you're a fan of pumpkin flavored things, and you enjoy cheesecake, that you'll flat out love this ice cream.  They nailed the flavor 100%, Ben, Jerry, if you're reading this, high five each other, because boys, you hit this one out of the park. It's a great flavor that I will definitely get again before it's gone. The only complain I would have with it is that I found myself wanting more graham cracker swirl, and I kind of wish the swirl had been slightly darker,  because it looks so similar to the color of the ice cream that it was hard to tell sometimes until you tasted it. But that's just nit-picking. This stuff is a great addition to your autumn snacking. Go grab a pint today!

I give Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice cream a B+

Klondike Kandy Bars Cookies & Cream and Caramel & Peanutes

Whats' this? A post on a Sunday?! If that Sunday is NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY then you're damn right FGFB is going to be out all day celebrating as hard as we can. But for people not so extreme, we picked up some Klondike Kandy Bars, Klondike's newest civilian freezer option. Let's see what we got hurrrrr and what exactly, you'd do, for a Klondike bar.

I started off with what I was most excited about, The Caramel & Peanuts.

The size I wasn't very impressed with, but, it's pretty standard now with the downsizing of all ice cream, candy, or any other bar options, so I'd say it's in line with market bar value.

On the outside of the bar, was a standard, not as thick milk chocoloate coating, with small peanuts sprinkled about within itself. The coating sets the tone for the texture of the bar, as soon as you bite in you have this to push through before you can get into the vanilla inside, where presumably, there would be caramel.

There is, but just not enough. The Klondike Kandy Bar was extremely low on the caramel, but it wasn't too bad, seeing as how you have the classic Klondike ice cream in the middle.
The whole bar was lackluster at best, the caramel riding along the vanilla wave, with just a little bit of peanut texture, and a thin, non descript candy shell that would pass by everyone, unnoticed, unloved, working a day job at a call center.

Let's see if these Cookies & Cream were any better!

This guy was slightly better than the last one. I wasn't insulted by the thickness of the candy shell. If any company whining about costs and wondering how to make candy shells on bars correctly, call up Magnum, or maybe Dove. Unaffected by the Dot Com burst and the housing crisis of 2008, Dove and Magnum coat their bars like Khal Drogo does wannabe king's heads in gold.

The Cookies & Cream flavors felt exactly like you'd expect them to be. Expect a Hershey's cookies and Cream chocolate bar, but without the Hershey's chocolate to go with it.

Overall these bars were both just OK. I wouldn't take a Khalasar across the Narrow Sea to get either one of these, but if I came across one at a party or in a freezer, they'd satiate that Ice Cream sweet tooth for a bit. It's kind of like someone at Klondike wanted to make these cool bars, but the suits at the top put up so much red tape that the poor Klondike dreamer just couldn't make it the quality that he had wanted. Klondike wants to make a good bar, they do, but in the end, these just fall so very flat, that if you see them in the store, you might as well try something else.

I give Klondike Kandy Bars Caramel & Peanut and Cookies & Cream both a
 D
If you guys are really an Ice Cream name I can trust, stop pussyfooting around
and make a bar that means something. It's National Ice Cream day for godsake, you
should be ashamed. What would your mother say?
-Josh
